A hotel stay needs an arrival date, a departure date and a matching number of nights. “Three days” or “until Monday” can leave the booking unclear. This fictional front-office exercise shows how to reconcile the dates, count an extension and keep an unconfirmed request separate from the existing reservation.
Count nights between the two dates
Training reservation R14 has arrival on 6 November 2026 and departure on 9 November 2026. The overnight stays are the nights beginning 6, 7 and 8 November: three nights. The departure date is not an additional overnight stay in this example.
Write the full month name when reading the dates back: “Arrival 6 November, departure 9 November, three nights.” A short numeric date can be interpreted differently across regions. This exercise concerns an ordinary overnight stay; it does not define a day-use product or a hotel's charging policy.
Oracle's OPERA Cloud booking documentation lists arrival, nights and departure as separate fields and explains that entering the number of nights updates departure. It also records arrival and departure times separately. The important training habit is to read back the resulting dates, not assume that one changed field proves the whole booking is correct.
Work out what an extension actually adds
The fictional guest asks to depart on 11 November instead. Keeping arrival on 6 November gives five nights: 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 November. The request adds two nights, beginning 9 and 10 November. It does not add five nights to the original stay.
A useful pending note is: “R14: request received to change departure from 9 to 11 November; total would become five nights, adding two. Availability, terms and guest acceptance pending. Current confirmed departure remains 9 November.” These are invented training details, not a live reservation.
The authorized colleague must check the actual availability and applicable terms before confirming. After an approved change, reopen the saved reservation and read back its arrival, departure and nights together. Do not copy the proposed dates into a confirmation while the request is still unresolved.
Check a stay that crosses a month boundary
Another classroom booking arrives on 28 November and departs on 2 December 2026. Its nights begin on 28, 29 and 30 November and 1 December: four nights. Subtracting only the day numbers, 2 minus 28, is meaningless because the months differ. Use the complete dates or a calendar.
Separate clock time from the booked night
A message saying “I land at 00:30 on 7 November” does not by itself identify the booked arrival date or guarantee immediate room access. Clarify whether the guest wants a room immediately after landing, then check the confirmed booking and the hotel's arrangements. Do not silently move the arrival date backwards or promise an early check-in.
Use a short reconciliation check
- Confirm the property, reservation reference and complete dates.
- List the overnight dates or use a calendar to verify the count.
- For a change, record old dates, requested dates and the difference.
- Keep requested, approved and saved states distinct.
- Read back the final saved dates and the separate arrival-time request.
